Unfortunately, hygiene and basic cleanliness practices are going to be one of the first things to go when SHTF. As such, preppers need to have a way to be able to keep their teeth clean when all hell breaks loose. Many people forget about keeping their mouth clean during the stress of a long-term emergency. However, not doing so can cause a host of very painful problems. And these will only get worse without having immediate access to a dentist.Maintenance is a lot easier (and less painful) than trying to deal with a root canal or infection when SHTF. That’s why it’s important to know these….
5 Ways To Keep Your Mouth Healthy In A Crisis
Get A Toothpick
Toothpicks can help you remove stuff stuck in your teeth that may otherwise fester and cause problems later. However, if you didn’t think to add toothpicks to your bug-out bag, you can simply sharpen the end of a small stick and use that.
Make Tree Bark Toothpaste
Although it won’t taste very good, you can make an effective toothpaste out of tree bark. The trick is to choose oak options that are high in tannic acid, such as hickory, birch, oak, and poplar. Then boil the oak in water so the tannic acid releases from the bark.
The solution that’s leftover can then be used as a toothpaste.
Chew Some Sap
Tree sap is sticky, and can help pull off leftover gunk from your teeth. This is why it’s known by some as “nature’s chewing gum.”
Munch On Sticks And Twigs
If there’s no sap available, you can also chew on some small twigs and sticks. This is helpful, as it helps activate your salivary glands. This, in turn, helps wash off your teeth.
Just be sure that whatever tree you take the sticks and twigs from isn’t poisonous. Otherwise, you may have bigger problems on your hands.
Take Advantage Of Plaintains
Plantains are plants that grow all over North America. And, while they look like weeds, they can actually do a great deal to help you maintain a clean, healthy mouth.
Plantains have some pretty amazing medicinal uses. One of which is that it can help kill off bacteria that would otherwise cause cavities.
Plantains are also very beneficial for their ability to soothe toothaches. This can seriously come in handy, seeing as toothaches are a nuisance at best, and incredibly painful at worst.
Simply chew on the leaves of the plantain plant to reap the benefits of this amazing “weed.” Otherwise, you can also crush the leaves in a pot of water, and boil it for a few minutes. Let it cool, and then strain out the leaves. Now you’ve got an herbal tea that can help fight off infection in your mouth. Swish it around for a few seconds before swallowing to reap the full benefits.
