Salt is one of the best ingredients in the world. Not only does it taste good, but it also enhances all the other flavors in a dish, bringing them out. It’s also quite useful as a preservative, allowing you to keep meats and other foods around longer.
However, there are many other survival uses for salt that many people overlook. And these uses can not only better a survival experience – they can also be lifesaving!
6 Incredible Ways To Use Salt In A Crisis
Rinse The Nasal Passages
Many people swear by a good nasal rinse when they’re suffering from congestion and sinus pressure. It’s also great for curing a sinus infection. That’s because this salty rinse cleans and lubricates nasal passages, clearing out the gunk inside.
To make your own, simply combine 1/2 tsp of non-iodized sea salt and a pinch of baking soda into 8 oz of clean, purified water. (Make sure to boil the water beforehand to ensure there’s no bacteria in it).
When the water is slightly warm, pour it into a neti pot. You can also use a water bottle (as shown in the video below). Whatever you use, make sure to disinfect it first!
Tilt your head to the side over a sink, and pour the water directly into one nostril. It will quickly come out the other side. If it isn’t working, lightly squeeze the bottle to add a bit of pressure.

Scale Fish Faster
To make scaling a fish way easier, let it soak in salt water for a while before attempting. The salt will loosen the scales, making them much easier to take off.
In a survival situation, you need your food to last as long as possible. Thankfully, salt can help extend the shelf-life of your food.
Soak foods (like cheese or apples) in salt water. Then wrap them in plastic wrap. This will prevent mold from growing, and allow you more time to eat it.
Put Out The Fire
If it’s time to put out the fire and leave the camp, you can use salt to kill the flames. Toss salt onto the fire to extinguish the flames. This method will remove the flames, but will keep the coals hot so you can cook with them later.
Keep Teeth Healthy
Unfortunately, luxuries like dentistry are going to be the first to go in an SHTF situation. However, with a little water, salt, and baking soda you can keep your teeth clean and healthy.
Combine the salt and baking soda. Then slowly add little bits of water, until a paste forms. Use a toothbrush (or your fingers if you need to) and rub this paste onto the teeth and gums. Do this for a couple minutes, and then rinse.
Get Rid Of Rust
Rust is corrosive, and can render once-sharp survival tools useless. To prevent this from happening, mix together 2 tbsp lemon juice and 6 tbsp salt. Rub the mixture onto the rust spot, and buff until the area is clean. Dry completely to make sure the rust does not return.
