The prepping community is full of strong opinions – especially when it comes to survival tips.
Some are great, some are terrible, and some are downright absurd.
But then there are the ones that seem unbelievable – but are totally true.
Sometimes, you need to do some weird stuff in order to through the unthinkable. And, to do that, you’ll need to know about these…
5 Off-The-Wall Survival Tips You’ve Never Heard Of
Use A Battery and a Gum Wrapper To Start A Fire
Believe it or not, all you need is a gum wrapper and a battery in order to get a fire going in no time. Before practicing this method, make sure to put on flame-resistant gloves. In addition, have all the tinder immediately next to you so you don’t waste the flame.
Simply cut a vertical strip off the gum wrapper. Fold it in half, and then cut off one of the corners. When you unfold it, the middle of the wrapper should be much thinner than it is at the ends.
Place the silver, shiny side of the wrapper facing down. Place one end onto the tip of the battery, and put the other end at the bottom end of the battery, push at each end simultaneously, and you’ll watch it ignite.
Pick A Lock
Need to get into a door with a lock on it? Pick the lock with the help of a soda can. All you’ll need is a sharpie, a pair of scissors, and an empty soda can.

Use Your Watch To Find Your Way
In 2018, very few people think to carry a compass. In fact, thanks to things like GPS navigation, most people will likely be totally lost when their cell phones and cars die.
Thankfully, even if you don’t have a map or a compass, you can use an analog watch to help direct you.
Now keep in mind that this method works differently for the Northern Hemisphere versus the Southern Hemisphere. However, this handy, somewhat absurd tip can easily help save your life.
Check out the video below to learn how to use an ordinary, analog watch as a compass.
Keep Warm With Bubblewrap
To be fair, many preppers likely won’t stockpile bubblewrap. And that’s because it’s big, bulky, and noisy (even though popping it is typically good for a morale boost). However, if you happen to see some in the trash while scavenging, this can really come in handy.
Bubblewrap has a surprising ability to keep you warm, and help prevent hypothermia. In fact, this thick wrap may be just as effective at trapping your body heat as multiple cotton blankets.
Make a DIY Slingshot
Here’s a surprising survival tactic. By using a pair of scissors, a balloon, a bamboo stick, and the top of a plastic bottle, you can easily make a DIY slingshot.
Now this method may take some practice. However, as the video shows, it can be quite useful. And, with some imagination, you can use even more dangerous ammo than just a bamboo stick (say, poisonous darts).
Here’s a video showing the process of making this DIY slingshot:
