How Baking Soda Can Help You Survive An Emergency
Poison ivy and bug bites can cause annoying irritation that can be hard to ignore. Luckily, baking soda can help neutralize the irritations and provide some necessary relief.
Make a paste by combining a teaspoon of baking soda with a little water. Then rub the mixture onto the skin, and cover with a bandage for a few hours.
You can also combine aloe vera with baking soda to make an even more effective solution for the itch.
Calm The Stomach
Baking soda has the amazing ability to neutralize stomach acid, thereby reducing pain and discomfort. Keep in mind you’ll want to use this treatment sparingly, as an over-dependence on it can cause an imbalance in electrolytes.
To take advantage of baking soda’s benefits, dissolve half a teaspoon into a glass of pure drinking water, and consume every couple hours. Do not exceed seven 1/2 teaspoons in the course of a 24-hour period. Do not consume more than three 1/2 tsp servings within 24 hours if you are over 60 years old.
Unfortunately, hygiene is likely going to be one of the first things to take a nosedive when SHTF. However, you can use baking soda to help combat this and keep yourself as clean as possible.
One of the ways to do this is to clean your hands with it. Combine 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water into a container to form an effective cleanser. You can also boost the mixture’s antibacterial properties by adding tea tree oil, thyme, or mint.
You can also rub this mixture onto the body to help neutralize body odors.
Clean Your Teeth
Unfortunately, dental health is likely to go downhill in the stress of an emergency. That’s why it’s important to use baking soda to help your teeth stay as clean as possible.
Baking soda is very effective for this, since it polishes the teeth and gums while simultaneously removing plaque and deodorizing the mouth. It’s also been shown to kill certain kinds of bacteria, which can contribute to tooth decay.
For the best results, combine six parts baking soda with one part sea salt. Throw the mixture into a blender and blend for 30 seconds. Then run your finger in some clean drinking water, and place it into the mixture sticking it to the skin.
Rub the mixture onto the gums and teeth, coating them completely. Spit out the excess, and leave the rest on for a full 15 minutes. Then rinse out the mouth completely.
Although this treatment is effective at killing bacteria, make sure to use it sparingly, as baking soda can be too abrasive on enamel when used consistently.
